Hair:
Women used to dye their hair red or
very pale as it was seen as a sign of wealth and beauty, as red
was
the hair colour of Queen Elizabeth and many women looked up to her and copied
the way she looked. This was often achieved by using dyes made from ingredients
such as plants or if the women could afford it they would wear hair pieces or
wigs. Eyebrows were also dyed pale and were
very thin to make the forehead seem as wide as possible as it was associated
with being in the upper class and even the aristocracy. Young women would often wear their hair
down and then as they became more mature would wear it up with twists, plates
and buns. Curls were also popular as Queen Elizabeth wore her hair in tight pin
curls that framed her face. This was achieved by using hot irons and wax or
grease to keep the hair in place. Rich women would add decoration to their hair
or wigs using pearls or jewels incorporated into their hairstyle.
